The Anchorage Assembly called for action from the city and state at Tuesday night’s regular assembly meeting in response to the record breaking amount of pedestrian deaths within Anchorage this year.

The Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday designated October as “Pedestrian Safety Month”ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage Assembly called for action from the municipality and state at Tuesday night’s regular assembly meeting in response to the record-breaking number of pedestrian deaths already seen within Anchorage this year.

“I’m really angry about that because any death in our community is a death in our community,” Zaletel said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the result of an officer-involved shooting or being a pedestrian trying to cross the street. Yet the response to those two different situations is wildly different.”Between 2000 and 2022, data shows that there were 164 verified Anchorage pedestrian deaths, an average of eight per year.

The resolution does not change current traffic enforcement laws or design. Instead, it calls for greater measures to be taken by the city and the state in the future.
