A PIAA referee is injured after being attacked following a junior varsity game in Crawford County. Police say Brandon Teed tackled the referee to the pavement.
That incident may have happened in Western Pennsylvania, but the trend of assaults on sports officials is increasing across the country.
Some parents told Maxine they haven’t noticed interactions with referees being much of a problem at Susquenita High School."It sucks 'cause you look what we have in the District III area. We’re down in officials as is,” said Joe Chrismer, head coach of the Susquenita High School football team. “My gripe is if you think you’re that good then go out and do it yourself. It’s not an easy job, and I know I can be tough on the referees, but at the end of the day I respect what they do," said Chrismer. “I mean, there’s no reason to go assault or even approach a referee after a game.”It has been brought to our attention of an assault on a PIAA sports official after a Junior High Football Game in District X. PIAA does not condone any such acts.
