There may not always be an ashtray available, but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to just toss your butts.

A male driver rolls down his window a little to let his burning cigarette smoke outside his car.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Everywhere that you look, you can find cigarette butts – on any road, park or sidewalk.

I was recently at Edgewater Beach, and there were butts in the sand. This is unfortunate because children are playing there, and people may want to stick their toes in the sand, sit or lay down. When building a sandcastle, the last thing you want is to shovel up someone’s cigarette butts that were casually discarded. Or even worse, get them in your hair after laying down.

I have to say that on the sidewalks and walkways around Edgewater beach house I didn’t see many butts. Hats off to the workers who are doing their best to keep it clean. Help them out; trash receptacles are everywhere. Let’s move on to those who are constantly throwing their butts out of car windows. Smoke away in your car, that’s fine, but please stop throwing your lit butts out the window. Yes, cars no longer have ashtrays, but you can buy one that fits your cup holder. If you don’t want to do that, keep a water bottle or soda can filled with water to deposit your butts.

All of the butts in the ground are from someone who casually tossed their cigarette. The world should not be treated as your personal ashtray. Do better.
