As Vietnam keeps a tight lid on expression, ex-cop Dao Anh Khanh is thriving as an artist. His secret? “It’s safer if the police don’t understand it.”

GAM TROI VALLEY, Vietnam—For 18 years, Dao Anh Khanh worked as an undercover policeman, spying on artists and reporting on what they were up to—until, that is, he decided to become one himself.

People flock to his home in Hanoi to see his installations, in which he often writhes, catlike, to a pounding rock soundtrack.
