Rhodey will finally be coming out from under Iron Man's shadow in Armor Wars. 'I still think we haven't really figured out who he is and really dug into that so that's what the movie is for.'
Armor Wars star Don Cheadle has teased how the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film will see his character step out from Iron Man’s shadow. Initially played by Terrence Howard in 2008’s Iron Man, the role of Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes was later taken over by Cheadle for 2010’s Iron Man 2 and each of his subsequent appearances in the MCU.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Throughout his previous appearances in the MCU, Rhodey has often played second fiddle to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. However, with Tony sacrificing himself at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the U.S. Air Force officer turned Avenger now has a chance to prove his mettle without being overshadowed by his billionaire best friend. In a recent interview with GQ, Cheadle said that he hopes that the upcoming Armor Wars film will go on to become his new favorite MCU outing.
Hopefully the favorite one that I'm going to do is Rhodey’s movie that we're going to shoot. I think I'm every successive film, he's coming more and more out of Tony's shadow and becoming his own person, but I still think we haven't really figured out who he is and really dug into that so that's what the movie is for. It was going to be a series, now we're going to do it as a film. Armor Wars. So I'm looking forward to that.
From his role as Peter Parker’s mentor to his role as both the brains and money behind the Avengers, the MCU’s recent Phase Four slate has often hinted at the fallout to come from Tony’s absence. During Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans also learned that Tony’s legacy as the former head of Stark Industries had been tainted by official investigations into the company’s stolen drone technology and its involvement in Mysterio’s attack on London.
Of course, as with any power vacuum, the MCU has a wealth of characters ready to step up and fill the void left by Tony’s demise. While fans have already been introduced to his most apparent successor, Ironheart’s Riri Williams who made her MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, perhaps Cheadle’s Rhodey will be the one to assume his late friend’s mantle as the new heart of the MCU.
