The Arizona Department of Public Safety issued another shelter-in-place order over a hazmat leak on the highway.
The department said anyone within a 1-mile perimeter of I-10 between Kolb and Rita streets should turn off their heaters and air conditioning system. — Angelica Carrillo February 15, 2023 The leak stems from a truck tractor pulling a box trailer that rolled over on a highway in Tucson, Arizona, at around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, killing the driver and spilling nitric acid. The first shelter-in-place order began at around 6:47 p.m. and was lifted at 8:45 p.m.
At 9:15 p.m., Unified Command, made up of the state public safety department and Tucson police and fire departments, said residents were safe to use their heaters and air conditioning units, anticipating the evacuation order for the area to be lifted at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning."While crews were attempting to remove the load from the commercial vehicle, gassing occurred," the public safety department said in an update.
Motorists in the Tucson area should continue to find alternate routes, and the interstate remains closed in both directions between Kolb and Rita roads.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines nitric acid as"a colorless liquid with yellow or red fumes with an acrid odor." "Exposure to nitric acid can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and mucous membrane; it can also cause delayed pulmonary edema, pneumonitis, bronchitis, and dental erosion," the CDC reports."Nitric acid is highly corrosive. Workers may be harmed from exposure to nitric acid. The level of exposure depends upon the dose, duration, and work being done."
