Monday’s late game followed up a rare lackluster finish at home from the Coyotes in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

But while it was usually Coyotes goaltender Karel Vejmelka making big saves on a heavy workload, this game featured Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault as the workhorse with 37 saves. The Coyotes were unable to control the game in overtime with the Canadiens putting up two shots, including Mike Hoffman’s game-winning goal at 1:08.

While not a common sight for Maccelli to head straight to the net, he was sent flying when Jakob Chychrun played a dump and chase and Lawson Crouse tapped it forward to Maccelli. Maccelli’s goal at 7:23 tied the game in the second period and put him two points behind for second-most points among NHL rookies with 22 .The scoreless start for both teams was erased 49 seconds into the second period when Canadiens left winger Cole Caufield ripped his shot past Vejmelka for the 1-0 lead.

Former Coyotes center Christian Dvorak tipped in defenseman Arber Xhekaj’s shot from the point at 4:27 for the Canadiens second goal on four shots.
