HP fared the best of the major traditional PC companies, with sales dropping (only) 24.2% to 12 million from 15.8 million.

The expected result of the massive slow-down in sales: large numbers of already-made PCs in inventory, which should drive discounting."Though channel inventory has depleted in the last few months, it's still well above the healthy four to six week range," IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani said in a statement."Even with heavy discounting, channels and PC makers can expect elevated inventory to persist into the middle of the year and potentially into the third quarter.

The IDC speculates that lowered demand will enhance manufacturers’ ability to decouple with China and move production elsewhere. Apple, for instance, has some iPhone production to India and some MacBook production to Vietnam. This will help protect companies from disruption as political tensions rise between China and the U.S., though a full decoupling from China is hard to imagine. The IDC speculates that 2024 might be the ticket, as an “aging installed base” comes up for replacement.
