Last year’s apple picking season was cut short due to 109 mile-per-hour winds during Tropical Storm Kay. Despite Hurricane Hilary, prospects for the upcoming season are looking good.

As Southern California transitions into its version of autumn each year, San Diegans are prompted to make their annual pilgrimage eastward to Julian for an idyllic afternoon of apple picking.

Ahead of the storm, at least one orchard — Julian Apple Co. — announced on social media that staff had preemptively picked ripe fruit to keep it from being destroyed in the predicted high winds. There has also been significantly more rain throughout the region leading up to this year’s apple harvest, leading to a more abundant crop.

“ came while the apples were still not ripe,” the former San Diego mayor said. “As they get riper, the idea is that the tree is trying to produce offspring. It’s got the seeds, so when it gets ripe, if you don’t pick it, it’ll fall on the ground.”Because he lost half of his crop in one day during Tropical Storm Kay, Hedgecock said he only had about a third of typical annual sales last year. He had to take out a loan to cover this growing year’s expenses.

Although agriculture and apple orchards only account for less than 5 percent of the 247 businesses registered as members of the Julian Chamber of Commerce, many of the other tourism-focused businesses such as restaurants, gift shops and bakeries thrive during the autumn harvest season.
