The Anchorage Police Department's new HOPE team is engaging with people experiencing homelessness.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - On a frosty November morning, Anchorage police officer Ruth Adolf and APD Social Work Navigator Tanya Vandenbos are on what’s become their regular beat — checking on homeless people in camps in the woods and on the streets.
Adolf and Vandenbos — the team’s only members — are longtime APD employees who switched their full-time focus to homelessness when the team was officially created at the end of August. Since late August, Fuchs said the team has had contact with more than 475 people, helped 43 people get into shelter or housing, and helped place four others into substance abuse treatment.
