Its destructive wake quickly prompted the closure of 143,000 acres within the national forest, where work began to restore the land for public safety and for its natural resources, according to forest officials who welcomed the reopening of local trails Friday.
“All of these places that meant something — not just to me but to everybody who enjoys going to the forest — were being destroyed. And that’s so sad,” Vasquez said. Areas being made accessible again are generally along the famed Angeles Crest Highway, east of Shortcut Saddle, including Mount Waterman, Islip Peak Trail, Dawson Saddle Trail, Cloudburst Summit, Charlton Picnic Area and Devil’s Canyon Trail.
Resting on a rock in the middle of nearby Cloudburst Summit – where charred logs and pockets of snow shined in the afternoon sun – Lucas Gentry of Dallas, Texas, said he had no idea the trails were closed due to a fire.
