Political opponents of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced a new alliance called INDIA to unseat Modi and defeat his ruling party. At stake, the alliance says, is the future of India’s multiparty democracy and secular foundations.

The victory for the opposition party in the recent state elections in southern Karnataka and northern Himachal Pradesh, has dented the ruling party’s image of invincibility.

Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, center, waves as he walks with other leaders during his months long Bharat Jodo Yatra or Unite India March, in Hyderabad, India, Nov. 1, 2022. Gandhi’s 136-day march on foot across the length of the country also appears to have shot India’s grand old Congress party back into political prominence.

India’s opposition leaders, from left, T.R.Baalu, M.K Stalin, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarajun Kharge, attend a meeting of opposition parties where they announced their alliance named INDIA in Bengaluru, India, July 18, 2023.
