Rochester Amerks forwards Lukas Rousek and Jiri Kulich celebrate Kulich's goal during the team's 5-4 victory against the Syracuse Crunch in Game 5 of the AHL North Division semifinal series Saturday, May 6, 2023. The Amerks were always good in the old days. They always made the playoffs and even won some Calder Cups. After a couple of years in the playoffs, playing exciting hockey and packing the Blue Cross Arena, the the team has raised the bar.
A new season starts Friday, and the 2024 playoffs are more than six months away. Appert said he begins every year with the idea of putting the past in the past. "We never talked about trying to make the playoffs last year, not until the last 15-20 games," Appert said. "We don't talk about Calder Cup, we don't put a trophy of the Calder Cup up day one. Our goal is to create an environment — in the locker room, in practice, in the weight room — where guys come here every day hungry to get better and make their games better and improve. That's the best way for us to develop our prospects.
