A US Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet collided mid-air near Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport, plummeting into the Potomac River. The crash resulted in a significant loss of life, with over 30 bodies recovered from the river. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the cause of the incident.

A US Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet collided mid-air near Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, crashing into the Potomac River. The American Airlines flight, American Eagle Flight 5342, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the Black Hawk helicopter involved was carrying three people. The collision sparked a massive rescue operation, with over 30 bodies recovered from the Potomac River.

The US Army Black Hawk helicopter was on a training mission at the time of the incident, according to Ron McLendon II, the Public Affairs Deputy Director for Joint Task Force-National Capital Region/Military District of Washington. The helicopter was from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion out of Davison Army Airfield in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Witnesses reported hearing a loud 'bang bang' sound, resembling an explosion or something from a war zone, moments before seeing smoke billowing from the area near Reagan Airport. A local resident, Abadi Ismail, captured footage of the unfolding rescue operation from his apartment window overlooking the Potomac River. American figure skaters, coaches and family members returning from a camp in Wichita were among the passengers on the American Eagle flight, according to U.S. Figure Skating. Two Russian world champions, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were also reported to be on board the flight. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash, working in conjunction with the U.S. Army and Federal Aviation Administration. The investigation is expected to be comprehensive, examining all aspects of the incident, including pilot error, mechanical failure, and weather conditions. The NTSB will analyze wreckage, interview survivors and witnesses, and review flight data recorders to determine the sequence of events leading up to the collision. Anton Spiridonov, an American-Russian figure skater, confirmed on social media that he was not on the flight despite earlier reports stating otherwise. Spiridonov expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian nationals were on board the American Airlines flight but did not disclose their names.
