An American Airlines flight and a military helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport Wednesday evening, D.C. Fire and EMS confirmed. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. local time, bringing a swift and massive emergency response. Video footage of the collision shows a large flash upon impact.
The airliner, a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operating as American Airlines Flight 5342, had approximately 60 passengers and four crewmembers aboard. It departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter. The number of people on board the helicopter is currently unknown. At least four people have been recovered from the scene and transported to hospitals. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport.
