An American Airlines flight and a military helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport Wednesday evening, D.C. Fire and EMS confirmed. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. local time, bringing a swift and massive emergency response. Video footage of the collision shows a large flash upon impact.

The airliner, a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operating as American Airlines Flight 5342, had approximately 60 passengers and four crewmembers aboard. It departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter. The number of people on board the helicopter is currently unknown. At least four people have been recovered from the scene and transported to hospitals. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a joint investigation, with the NTSB leading the effort. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the video of the collision, according to the White House. In a statement posted on X, Trump expressed his condolences, saying, 'I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls.'A ground stop was ordered at the airport following the collision, and emergency responders from across the region are on scene. Fireboats are actively working in the Potomac River, and the Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed its response. Fire departments from surrounding areas are staging at Gravelly Point, north of Reagan National Airport. A senior FBI official stated that Washington Field Office personnel are ready to assist but there is no indication of any criminal or terrorist activity involved in the crash. The cause of the collision remains under investigation
