Classes at Alta High School were canceled on Thursday after the school received a threatening tip through the SafeUT app. School officials said the Canyons School District would "err on the side of safety" as police continue to investigate the tip.
The trip reportedly suggested students may be planning to bring weapons to the school, according to a message sent to parents. Alta High officials said the tip may be an "ill-advised" hoax, but school administrators take any threat to the safety of students and the security of the school seriously.
"The decision to cancel classes Thursday is being made in an abundance of caution and hopefully will ease the minds of families who were concerned about the tip sent to the school," Alta High said in a statement posted to social media. "We recognized these circumstances may cause worry or anxiety in some students. When classes resume, counselors will be available if your student needs to process their thoughts and feelings.
" The school said AP testing that had been scheduled for Thursday has also been postponed. Information about make-up testing, as well as a make-up day for missed classes, would be provided at a later date. Information about athletic competitions scheduled to be held at the school was "forthcoming.
