Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a lawsuit against prosecutors and investigators involved in the fatal 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust, alleging malicious prosecution, civil rights violations, and defamation.

Actor Alec Baldwin filed a lawsuit in New Mexico, alleging malicious prosecution , civil rights violations, and defamation by prosecutors and investigators connected to the fatal 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Santa Fe, names special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, three Santa Fe County sheriff's investigators, and the county board of commissioners as defendants.

It claims the defendants sought to blame Baldwin for the actions of others, disregarding evidence and the law, and manipulated the case for personal and political gain. This lawsuit comes after a New Mexico judge dismissed involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin in July. His legal team argued that investigators mishandled evidence, including ammunition found at the sheriff's office that was allegedly concealed in unrelated case files. The state attorney general declined to appeal the dismissal, officially closing the criminal case in December. Special prosecutor Morrissey responded to the lawsuit, stating Baldwin’s legal team had hinted at this action since 2023 and expressed eagerness to face them in court. The October 2021 shooting occurred during a rehearsal at a Santa Fe ranch when a revolver held by Baldwin discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin maintains he pulled back the hammer but did not pull the trigger. The incident also resulted in the conviction of weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed for involuntary manslaughter, who is serving a 1.5-year sentence. Baldwin’s lawsuit seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory damages, legal fees, and interest. Separately, Hutchins’ parents and sister have filed a civil suit in New Mexico, while her widower and son settled their own claims. Baldwin has since resumed his acting career, appearing on Saturday Night Live, and plans are reportedly underway for a family reality TV show featuring him, his wife Hilaria, and their seven children.
