Alaska Senate sends budget to House with hours left before the legislative session ends

Sens. Bill Wielechowski and Cathy Giessel speak to Senate President Gary Stevens after the Senate started discussing the budget, shortly after 5 p.m. on the final day of the legislative session in Juneau on Wednesday.

The final day of the session began without the usual frenetic energy that accompanies the end of the Legislature’s work. Nearly deserted hallways and closed-door negotiations replaced the typical stream of staffers running from one chamber to another. The Senate amended its budget before passing it to include what Senate leadership members said were takeaways from budget negotiations convened by Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Tuesday night. But House members were tight-lipped about whether enough of them had been persuaded by the changes to vote in favor of the Senate’s budget proposal.

Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, presents an amendment to the Senate's budget proposal, during the last day of the legislative session in Juneau on May 17, 2023.
