ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Trailing by a goal in the second half of the MLS Cup Western Conference Semifinals, Obed Vargas sent a crossing pass in front of the net as the Seattle Sounders were looking to make something happen offensively. The ball deflected off LAFC defender Maxime Chanot and into the back of the net, as Vargas created the opportunity, with a little luck, to force an own goal for the equalizer.
After the match, Vargas, of Anchorage, shared a touching moment as he and his father Obed Vargas Sr. embraced in celebration of the 19-year-old’s success.Vargas came up through the Cook Inlet Soccer Club before making his MLS debut at just 15 years old. A Concacaf Champions League winner, he debuted with the Mexico men’s national team last month.Over four seasons, Vargas has appeared in 66 regular-season matches for Seattle. This year, the midfielder netted a goal and contributed seven assists.
