FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The U.S. Congress heard a passionate plea from Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the morning of Wednesday, March 16.
The President of Ukraine urged the U.S. to provide military aid to his country to help in the fight against Russia, which invaded earlier this month.Following the meeting, Alaska’s sole Congressman Don Young released a statement, praising Zelenskyy for his bravery and leadership, and calling for the U.S. to do more to help including banning Russian vessels from U-S waters.
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski released a video on her official Twitter page, encouraging Americans to use their hearts when thinking about this war. “His message was clear, that if Ukraine is not safe, democracy and freedom in other parts of the world are not safe,” she said. “This is the time for the United States to be there to help the brave, the extraordinary people of Ukraine in this brutal, aggressive, violent, bloody war that Putin has perpetrated.
Meanwhile, Senator Dan Sullivan said he found Zelenskyy’s speech moving and powerful, adding that the U.S. intelligence community needs to change its thinking about the inevitability of Ukraine’s loss to Russia in the war. “They could win,” Sullivan explained.
Later in the day, President Biden called Russian president Vladimir Putin a war criminal, ramping up his condemnation.
