In a battle between traditional football powers, Alabama beat Clemson, 89-82, in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament’s West Region final.
Alabama guard Mark Sears scored 23 points and made seven three-pointers in an 89-82 victory over Clemson on Saturday, leading the Crimson Tide to its first Final Four. LOS ANGELES — Nate Oats found himself where no Alabama men’s basketball coach has been before: Atop a ladder with scissors in hand, cutting down the net after securing a trip to the Final Four.
“Alabama and Clemson playing in L.A.,” Oats quipped. “Most people would think we’re out here playing in the Rose Bowl.” “If you’re the head basketball coach at Clemson or Alabama, you’re not going to become a basketball school,” Brownell said. “You’re going to be a football school. You better embrace that early on. That’s okay with me. I’m great with that.”. That pair of upsets set the stage for basketball’s answer to four wideouts vs. three yards and a cloud of dust.
Slowly but surely, Alabama’s willingness to trade two-pointers for three-pointers proved to be a winning formula. Stevenson, a freshman forward, scored 19 points and hit five three-pointers off the bench. Nick Pringle, a senior forward, added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Though Clemson claimed a decisive 44-26 advantage in paint scoring, it shot just 8 for 26 from outside, missed eight of its 16 free throw attempts and played from behind throughout the second half.
