Support in the Senate has been split, leading to a new version of the bill without sports betting or table games.
) - Lawmakers in Montgomery have sent two different bills to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk: a school choice bill and an IVF-protection bill.
One bill lawmakers did not send to Governor Ivey’s desk was the gaming bill. It passed in the House with a lot of momentum but stalled once it was sent to the Senate. Teetering support for the gaming bill led state senators to draft a new bill that left out sports betting and table games, leaving only the lottery as the main attraction. If that version of the gaming bill were to pass, it would be voted on in September, not November.
“They wanted an isolated vote, other senators agreed, they didn’t want people coming to the polls uneducated about the gaming bill and just thinking ‘Oh I’m for it,’ or ‘Oh, I’m against it,’” Orr said. “The thinking was if we have a separate election that voters who came and voted would be those who are truly interested in the topic.”
Orr also said even though the new Senate gaming bill removed sports betting and table games, things like video bingo would still be included.Copyright 2024 WAFF. All rights reserved.
