Moderate air quality forecasts extend into Friday for the Santa Clara Valley, and through Saturday for the Bay Area Coast and Central Bay.
Regulators issued an air quality advisory for the Bay Area on Thursday as smoke from surrounding wildfires affected the region. The advisory lasts into Friday, but experts say coastal winds might clear out the smoke by Thursday night. Some have been able to see and smell smoke Thursday afternoon. But our four senses aren’t the best gauge of pollution risk, said Kristina Chu of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
“Exposure to wildfire smoke is unhealthy, even for short periods of time,” wrote the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Research has shown pollution from wildfire smoke to be, surpassing 427,000 acres scorched Thursday. The Crozier Fire, which began Wednesday, had consumed some 1,187 acres in El Dorado County. Chu said various blazes could have contributed to Thursday’s air quality decline, with wildfires spotting the West Coast as far north as Canada.
“We’re kind of surrounded by fires right now,” Chu said. “And the scary thing is, it’s not even wildfire season.” While wildfires have burned around the Bay Area throughout the summer, the region is experiencing smoky skies Thursday due to a high pressure system that “greatly limits air flow,” said Rick Canepa, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. This weather pattern prevents air from mixing vertically, trapping wildfire smoke close to the ground.
Experts expect that an end to Thursday’s advisory is in sight. Onshore winds are expected to head in from the coast Thursday night, which should improve air quality.Harriette Cole: I was in another city, and I saw him with a womanMiss Manners: My departing co-worker offered me a gift.
