An Aurora councilman is under fire after 'despicable and inappropriate' videos from 2020 were discovered on a Facebook page promoting his restaurant, Legends of Aurora Sports Grill. In the videos, Steve Sundberg acted out several racist stereotypes.
Amid calls for the Aurora city councilman’s resignation over online videos depicting his use of racist stereotypes of Muslims, Latinos, South Asians and Black people, Steve Sundberg issued an apology Wednesday.
When Colorado House Rep. Iman Jodeh, a Palestinian-American Muslim and Aurora lawmaker, first saw the videos, she was shocked that the videos had been online since 2020, but people didn’t seem to know about them. And then came the feelings of “disgust and betrayal and anger.” “Growing up in America, it had become commonplace for us to see derogatory depictions of Muslims and Arabs that was very normalized,” Jodeh said. “But I think the wake of Black Lives Matter and Me Too and a lot of movements really codifying the marginalized communities’ demand to be respected and recognized for their culture and heritage has shifted that mindset of being so normal.
“It was so reminiscent of racial actions from years past and took me back to very hurtful times,” said Colorado Sen. Janet Buckner, a Black lawmaker who represents Aurora. The progressive members on council likely don’t have enough votes for a censure, noted Councilman Juan Marcano, one of the Latino members on the City Council, but he said he agrees that Sundberg should resign.
