The Pirates play Childress in the Class 3A state semifinal at Thursday 3 p.m.

Jordan Balderaz goes up for a layup during Lytle basketball team practice on Monday, March 6, 2023. They will play in the 3A State Semifinals on Thursday.A lot has changed since Lytle was last in the state basketball tournament. In 1924 the state tournament was held in Austin. The Pirates of almost century ago took a train on the International-Great Northern Railroad to Austin.

The Pirates, who play Childress in the Class 3A state semifinal at Thursday 3 p.m., will take a bus ride just 26 miles from their campus to the Alamodome this time around. And they will have the community behind them, with signs of support on businesses around town and even a parade on Wednesday before they travel to San Antonio.

The Pirates earned their ticket to the state tournament last Saturday behind Balderaz, who scored 42 points against Corpus Christi London in the Region IV championship.
