The theft occurred Thursday at Birds by Joe 2, a family-owned store in Saddle Brook specializing in hand-raised parrots and other exotic birds.

The theft occurred at Birds by Joe 2 in Saddle Brook when a man wearing a dark Nike hooded sweatshirt entered the shop and ran off with an African grey parrot, police said.Police are seeking the public’s help in locating an African grey parrot valued at $7,000 that was stolen Thursday from an exotic bird shop on Route 46 east in Bergen County.

“The clerk packaged the parrot in a single cage display to show the customer. He grabbed the cage and quickly ran out of the store,” police said in a statement.Rukavishnikova told NJ Advance Media on Monday that the had “asked all the right questions” about the African grey parrot, including the size cage required and the type of food needed. He also told workers he grew up with birds.

“As soon as I closed the zipper, he grabbed the carrier, ran out the door and through the parking lot,” she said. “I made it a few steps out the door but I couldn’t catch up. He ran really fast.”
