Rep. Adam Schiff told SFGATE he isn't sure Republicans would allow Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee to be filled.
In the last decade, our democracy has been tested like never before, and when I think of all the candidates running for this seat, I have the record of national leadership in defending our democracy and our voting rights and our institutions. Californians have come to expect that their senator is going to be a national figure, championing the rights that are most important to them and their values. I think I have the strongest record of doing that.
SFGATE: Can you think of any specific policy issues that you may disagree with your opponents on or any that set you apart from those two?I think when you compare our voting records, they're very similar. In some measures, I'm more progressive than others, and in other measures, they're more progressive. So, what really distinguishes us is our effectiveness and the leadership that we've shown.
People are compassionate and generous, but they also want results. I'm working on metrics so that we can determine what's working and what's not, and [those metrics] will allow us to invest in things that do help people find shelter. I'm working on approaches to try to beef up support for mental health services and substance abuse programs, as well as stronger measures to attack the fentanyl crisis.
SFGATE: California Republicans, while vastly outnumbered in the state, will probably still have a lot of say in who the next senator is, especially if the general election comes down between you and another Democrat. Do you think your work on the Trump impeachment and the Russia investigation has sort of poisoned the well in that regard?Certainly among the most extreme MAGA crowd. They're not going to like any of the candidates on the Democratic side of the aisle.
