Act 86 officially went into effect on Monday and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was in Perry County to celebrate the new legislature allowing canned cocktails to be bought at grocery shops, gas stations, and convenience stores . Governor Shapiro and his team visited Rutter’s in Duncannon, one of the newest businesses to have liquor based canned cocktails hit their shelves.
The law was signed by the Governor on July 17, 2024, and states that ready-to-drink cocktails , such as High Noon, NUTRL, and Jack Daniels Coke, can now be sold at the locations. Previously, the law only allowed these types of stores to sell malt based canned drinks such as beers or hard seltzers, like White Claws.
“I think its gonna make lives more convenient,” said Philip Santini, Senior Director of Advertising and Food Service for Rutter’s.He received a myriad of responses from people that were excited about the new law, as well as some replies that implied the Governor was not focused on what is important.
However, others around Perry County think the new law will be beneficial to Pennsylvania residents and more in the long run. “Now they’re gonna make two stops. It’s gonna help the environment, less gas stops, put it all together like that,” said William McGinley, a shopper at the gas station.
