CHICAGO -- The man accused of shooting and killing Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez was ordered held in jail until trial when he made his first court appearance on Thursday.Darion McMillian, 23, is charged with one count each of first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, residential burglary, unlawful use of a weapon—specifically a machine gun—and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Martinez approached the driver's side, while his partner was on the passenger side.Prosecutors said McMillian was in the front passenger seat of the car as officers approached, when they noticed him reaching for a backpack at his feet. The officers repeatedly ordered him to stop, but instead McMillian pulled out a .40 caliber handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device and an extended magazine.
