“As easy as it would have been for me to send bottled water and a sack lunch with my children, as a teacher, I wouldn’t have had the resources to make sure all of my students had clean water,” said Ashley Kolb, an HISD teacher who also has children in the district. “We no longer have bottled water reserves on my campus like we did during COVID protocols, so students would have likely not had access to safe, clean water.
Other neighboring districts that had only a few campuses within city limits impacted by the boil notice opted to remain open Monday. They included Alief, Cypress Fairbanks, Galena Park, Fort Bend and Katy ISDs.“Due to the City of Houston’s boil water notice today, students will be provided bottled water & extra hand sanitizer during the school day,” Alief ISD officials said in a tweet.
Cara Hatcher Baez, another HISD parent, said working from home with 7-year-old twins Monday was not ideal, but it would be manageable for a day.
