KNTV signed on Sept. 12, 1955, as the South Bay's first television station — calling itself"The Bright Spot on Your Dial.

" KNTV began its first five years as an independent before becoming an ABC affiliate in 1960 — serving San Jose, Salinas, and Monterey. KNTV was one of the few stations located outside the market it served. KNTV's owner, A.T. Gilliland, sold the station to Landmark Communications in 1978.

The Landmark years represented a period of growth with an emphasis on local news. Twelve years later, Granite Broadcasting Corporation purchased the station and sharpened its local news focus by branding itself as"The San Jose News Channel" and using Dionne Warwick's song 'Do you Know the Way to San Jose' as its newscast theme music.

On Feb. 14, 2000, Granite Broadcasting struck a deal with the National Broadcasting Company to make KNTV the new NBC affiliate in the San Francisco market — replacing KRON, which had held that agreement for decades. Nielsen reassigned KNTV from the Santa Cruz-Salinas-Monterey market to the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose DMA — the fifth largest television market in the country, making KNTV the only station in recent history to switch markets.

In December 2001, NBC announced a twist to the affiliation deal by purchasing KNTV from cash-strapped Granite for $230 million. The network had already owned Telemundo station KSTS in San Jose and wanted to create a duopoly in the Bay Area. KNTV officially began broadcasting NBC programming at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day 2002, featuring an on-air welcome from Jay Leno of The Tonight Show.

Later that morning, Al Roker of The Today Show introduced the new anchors live from KNTV's studios. In late 2002, the station rebranded itself 'NBC 11.

' With an expanding operation and cramped studio space, KNTV moved from its longtime headquarters in downtown San Jose to a new, state-of-the-art, all-digital facility on the city's north side in 2004. As part of the transition to digital television, KNTV rebranded itself 'NBC Bay Area' to better reflect its commitment to serving the entire Bay Area. to get news at your fingertips, including breaking news push alerts sent directly to your phone.
