Un abogado de uno de los cinco expolicías de Memphis acusados de matar a golpes a Tyre Nichols después de una parada de tráfico indicó en documentos judiciales que los investigadores encontraron una droga alucinógena y tarjetas de crédito robadas en el auto del afroestadounidense cuando lo detuvieron, pero las autoridades no han confirmado dichas aseveraciones.
Un abogado de Justin Smith dijo que el inventario del automóvil de Nichols realizado por la Oficina de Investigaciones de Tennessee mostró que tenía psilocibina —una sustancia alucinógena que se encuentra en los hongos— cuando la policía lo detuvo el 7 de enero supuestamente por conducir de forma imprudente antes de que lo golpearan. El incidente quedó captado por las cámaras de los policías.
Nichols se escapó de los agentes después que lo sometieron con gas lacrimógeno y una pistola paralizante tras detenerlo por la infracción vehicular, según el video y las declaraciones de las autoridades. Los agentes alcanzaron a Nichols y luego le propinaron puñetazos, patadas y golpes con una porra policial, de acuerdo con las autoridades. Nichols, de 29 años, murió en un hospital tres días después de la paliza.
