Could Aaron Judge change coasts this upcoming MLB season? BNightengale reports San Francisco is ready to make big splash in MLB free agency.
“Stars bring people to the ballpark,’’ says Philadelphia Phillies president Dave Dombrowski. “People like to see great players. They do things that are exciting. They do things that are fun. Usually, unless you’re not very good at all, help you win. So that makes you better, too. It brings more people to the ballpark. Judge, who rejected a seven-year, $213.5 million contract from the New York Yankees this spring, is expected to receive at least $300 million as a free agent.
If the Giants land Judge, and perhaps grab another free agent, too, there’s no telling how it could change the landscape of the National League West. “Certainly, it drives a lot more attention,’’ Cashman says. “It lights the flame, even though the flame is always burning. It puts a log on the fire during the winter. It gets fans excited earlier. But it doesn’t matter if they’re big names or not, they become big names if they’re playing well.
The San Diego Padres went through the same ordeal in the spring of 2019 when they courted free-agent third baseman Manny Machado. They hadn’t reached the postseason since 2006. Their last winning season was 2010. They convinced him, along with $300 million, that they would do everything possible to win.
“I think good teams are fun to watch,’’ Zaidi said, “and teams that fall below expectations, create frustrations for everybody, including fans. And unfortunately, that's where we were this year.’’ “It’s good business to have good teams and great players,’’ Boras said.
