"We must strengthen the board's relationship with the workers of the library and the community," Lane said during the school board meeting. He said he plans to serve as a bridge between the board and the community, and will work with all members of the library board.The Indianapolis Public Schools board, one of the three appointing bodies for library board members, acknowledged in a news release following the unanimous vote that their decision to appoint Lane is controversial.
School commissioner Nicole Carey told IndyStar that Lane was the best candidate of those considered for appointment. She pointed to his experience as a special collections librarian at the Indianapolis Public Library,"Given the current political climate and cultural climate, it was important for me to find someone who understood the accusations of anti-black racism, and someone who understood racial inequity on a systemic level, not an individual level," Carey told IndyStar.
Carey defended Lane, stating that systemic injustice warrants outrage, and those calling for decorum are dismissing that outrage.
