Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told us this week she supports the outlines of Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s sweeping proposal to break up tech firms like Amazon and Facebook. More in Morning Tech:
As host to the European headquarters of many of the world's biggest tech companies, Ireland bears much of responsibility for enforcing EU's wide-ranging new privacy law. As such, Irish Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon has emerged as one of the globe's most consequential privacy regulators. Dixon visited POLITICO's headquarters for a discussion this week on the heels of her Senate Commerce testimony.
— Dixon suggested that if the United States had put in place a set of privacy rules of the road before the internet era, her office would find itself with less work on its plate today. She stressed she avoids telling other countries exactly how their privacy regimes should work, but told MT: "We inherited the platforms in Ireland as exported from Silicon Valley, typically. When they were exported without the filter of a baseline data protection law, our job was then rolling back features and forcing a reverse engineering based on EU data protection laws.
