The steer that sold for a record-breaking $1 million has the same fate as all the others: slaughter.

grand champion steer at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Friday, March 18, 2022, at NRG Stadium in Houston.Don D. Jordan for years thought the Grand Champion steer should sell for $1 million on the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s 100th anniversary.

By bidding a $1 million, Jordan hopes to encourage young buyers to beat the record again by the time the rodeo turns 100.Each year of the rodeo, Jordan is reminded of the decades he’s spent in its arenas with cattle. As the group posed for a photo of the rodeo’s historic moment, the auction’s announcer told everyone to smile — only one person in the frame wasn’t. Aven Horn, a 16-year-old Anson girl who raised Vanilla Ice since he was a calf, tried to show a brave face as she processed a slew of complicated emotions.

Vanilla Ice let out a perfectly-time, almost knowing, “moo” as the group posed in silence. The crowd erupted in laughter. Jordan said the steer’s fate was the same as all others: slaughter. The castrated males obviously can’t be bred, he said.
