Florists across the Garden State will be handing out flowers to unsuspecting strangers Wednesday as part of a nationwide 'Petal It Forward' initiative.
Unsuspecting locals have received flower bouquets from Angelone’s Florist in Raritan since 2017. This year the family-owned business will also host a drive to support a local food pantry and pregnancy center, said manager John Angelone. If you receive flowers from a complete stranger Wednesday, don’t be surprised — florists across New Jersey are giving away free bouquets as part of a nationwide initiative to spread kindness.
Shari Bauma, the owner of The Flower Junction in Lumberton, said her shop will be taking part as a way to “spread some positivity and cheer in this world we live in now.” Bauma heard of the initiative through her flower supplier and began to participate five years ago. This year she’ll be handing out sunflowers, a bloom that’s, “bright and sunny to cheer someone up,” she said.
Angelone’s Florist, a family business that spans four generations, started to participate in 2017. John Angelone, who manages the shop, said it’s an opportunity to impact someone’s day. Angelone will also host a drive for the Raritan-based Pregnancy Aid & Information Center and the Raritan Food Pantry as another way to “petal” it forward, he said.
