C.K. opened his set with an extended bit about “moral confidence.” The general idea was that most people think they wouldn’t be complicit in something terrible, even if they lived in an era when that behavior was commonplace. For instance, his logic goes, a person looking back on the Civil War era today might think they would have known better than to own enslaved people.
For a contrite comic, this could be a perfect setup to address the elephant in the room: his offenses, which in his written statement from six years ago, he claimed he could not forgive himself for.
