The film delights in public displays and grand gestures, such that it openscloses on a pair of weddings.
But it’s a testament to the film’s attention to detail that the bond between Naveen and Jay nevertheless feels sturdy. Soni and Groff share a warm and relaxed chemistry, bolstered by Eric Randall’s efficient script .
Meanwhile, Naveen’s parents struggle to understand the choices he’s made, or indeed the fact that he feels entitled to make the sort of choices they themselves never had at all. When Naveen summons the courage to confront his father about his disinterest in his son’s impending nuptials, Archit retorts, “You know how much say my father gave me in my wedding? None.” The bitterness in his voice hints at wounds from his own past that have may have scarred over, but have certainly never disappeared.
