Bryce Young had nine passes of 20-plus yards in the loss at Tennessee but none went longer than a dump down to JoJo Earle that covered 42 yards. At LSU, the longest downfield pass was the 41-yard touchdown to Ja’Corey Brooks when Young’s athletic scramble left the sophomore receiver wide open in a lost Tiger secondary.Don’t forget the big plays at Arkansas that turned a near meltdown into a relative blowout.
Each time, it grabbed fourth-quarter leads only to see the defense miss opportunities to put teams away. Even in the Texas win, the Young heroics that led to a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jahmyr Gibbs wasn’t enough. A Texas field goal with 1:29 left required a frantic 8-play, 44-yard drive ending in Will Reichard’s game-winning kick.
Of course, the Tide offense stalled on the bid for a game-winning score. That led to Reichard’s missed 50-yard field goal with 15 seconds left. Two passes for 18 and 27 yards later, the Vols kicked their own game-winning kick. So stop Tennessee on one of those three third/fourth downs or LSU on one of those two and it could be a totally different story.
