A deal with the devil: Dallas Symphony Chamber Players do Stravinsky’s ‘Soldier’s Tale’ | DMNSCantrell
many years ago via a long-playing record. But offhand I don’t remember a live performance before Monday night’s by the Dallas Symphony Chamber Players., it’s Stravinsky at his wittiest. Tart, mischievous music is studded with offbeats and cross rhythms, sometimes accompanying, sometimes interspersed with, spoken narration. The narration, originally penned in French by the Swiss writer C.F.
Given how rarely the piece is presented, it was arguably worth giving the audience some prefatory illustrations of sections of the piece: 15 minutes max, not 30. It also would have been helpful if the printed program had included a section-by-section synopsis of the story, which gradually reveals that the soldier sells his soul as well as the violin to the devil. The narrator tells the story, but also personifies the soldier and the devil, as well as a king and a princess.
William Joyner, an operatic tenor on faculty at the University of North Texas, delivered the narration with high drama, even giving the soldier a Texas accent. The unaccompanied patches of narration seemed longer than I remembered, but all the pre-performance talk may have made them seem so. The English translation was not credited.
