By Emily Tamkin Emily Tamkin Reporter covering foreign affairs Email Bio Follow March 20 at 8:23 AM Danish lawmaker Mette Abildgaard brought her baby to Parliament on Tuesday — and was surprised when the speaker, Pia Kjaersgaard, asked her to take her daughter out.

Through an assistant, the speaker apparently passed Abildgaard a note, which read, “You are not welcome with your baby in the parliament’s chamber.” Denmark is hardly the only country grappling with such questions. A German legislator was removed from a state parliament with her 6-week-old last August. “I always thought that we were past that point,” the legislator, Madeleine Henfling, said. “I don’t understand what the problem is.” In 2017, a Japanese city councilwoman was kicked out for bringing her baby to work.
