Which franchises failed a shared universe?

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When the popularity and success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe exploded into mainstream cinema, several shared universes were created to emulate Disney's success which should never have happened. The MCU began in 2008 and revolutionized modern franchise filmmaking.

Tom Cruise was cast in the film as was Sofia Boutella in the titular role. Alongside Cruise and Boutella was Russell Crowe who played the dual role of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Shortly before the premiere of The Mummy, an image was shared of Cruise, Boutella, and Crowe alongside Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp to outline the core actors who would feature in the Dark Universe going forward.

This success may lead many to wonder why Sony's Spider-Man Universe should never have happened. The answer to this becomes clear when realizing all films are centered on Spider-Man villains, yet the universe does not actually include the Web-Slinger himself. Despite relative commercial success, all three films were negatively received by critics, primarily due to the pointless nature of telling stories centered on Spider-Man villains whose comic counterparts do not warrant standalone tales.

6 The DCU & DCEU The DCU and DCEU are certainly intriguing inclusions on this list, as each one has merit for existing as a shared universe. However, it is the unclear nature of the franchise since both have been muddled together which means it should not exist and would have been better off as two separate universes. The DCEU began in 2013 with Man of Steel and the nature of DC Comics meant that if any franchise could succeed in emulating the MCU, it was this one.

5 Guy Ritchie's King Arthurverse Another failed attempt at a shared universe came in 2017 with Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. King Arthur was another shared universe plan that Warner Bros. envisioned as a six-movie franchise. Legend of the Sword was intended to be the pilot for various spin-offs, something the film's performance rendered dead on arrival.

2 Fox's X-Men Movies Much like the DCEU/DCU, 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise is an interesting inclusion on this list. As a standalone franchise, Fox's X-Men films worked as a precursor to modern superhero filmmaking. The original trilogy and installments like X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past worked as a five-film story spanning one timeline.

A New Way to Measure the Expansion Rate of the Universe: Redshift DriftA New Way to Measure the Expansion Rate of the Universe: Redshift DriftAlmost all the galaxies in the Universe are speeding away from us because of the Big Bang and the acceleration of dark energy. One technique to measure this expansion is redshift, seeing how light is reddened over time as its wavelength stretches out. But every observation astronomers can make is a snapshot, measuring the redshift now. But an intriguing idea is to measure how the redshift changes over time as a galaxy's movement accelerates. It's called 'redshift drift' and requires an exact series of measurements over time.
