Some classic movies are seemingly perfect upon release and yet even the most niche and unlikely films can spiral into full-blown film franchises.
While many well-known movie franchises are fairly modern, from the MCU to John Wick, there are some that pull from older, classic films, some released as early as 1933. Furthermore, recent film franchises often rely heavily on a massive universe and unending references, whereas others sustain themselves only on a single, titular character that is remodeled over and over again.
For 60 years, Planet of the Apes has remained a well-known film franchise based on a much older and briefer story. Both the 1968 and 2001 Planet of the Apes aligned fairly closely with Boulle's book plot: a man travels to a distant planet where monkeys have enslaved humans.
6 Psycho It is unlikely that author Robert Bloch realized that his novel "Psycho" would have its own on-screen universe over 60 years after its release, but that is exactly what happened. In 1959, Bloch wrote a novel loosely based on the crimes of Ed Gein. The next year, famed horror director Alfred Hitchcock adapted the story into a film, which includes the iconic Psycho shower scene. Somehow, in both book and film forms, the Psycho franchise grew.
Like Jaws, the Free Willy franchise hinges on its titular oceanic creature, except this franchise takes a much lighter, kid-friendly tone. Though the franchise didn't move farther past the original movie, the existence of sequels shows how impactful and full of potential the first movie was. Although Free Willy isn't the best-known franchise, it stands out as being an interesting and nostalgic expansion of a classic film.
3 Poltergeist The Poltergeist franchise is one that grew beyond the original film and could still grow bigger in the future. First the original 1982 Poltergeist film came out, and two direct sequels followed in the next few years. A Poltergeist television series appeared between 1996 and 1999. Then, in 2015, a reboot was released.
