Ranchman’s can live on — if someone buys it.
Look close: The walls at Ranchman's Ponder Steakhouse are covered in news stories and celebrity photos. Owner Dave Ross says the 75-year-old restaurant served its last steaks on Oct. 30, 2023, unless someone new wants to buy it and reopen it.has closed after 75 years. Owner Dave Ross locked the door after lunch on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, saying a shortage of cooks and his own ongoing health problems have made running the historic business impossible.Chicken-fried steak came in three sizes.
Still, the reopening has been rocky. The restaurant has only been open for lunch because Ross couldn’t find enough cooks. He’s recovering from a hip replacement and an unexpected trip to the ER. Last week, the restaurant was closed for four days after a delivery truck hit the gas meter. Ross laughs. But it’s not funny.“I’ve never been able to follow Plan A, not since the beginning,” he says.
Ross hopes Ranchman’s can reopen if he can catch the interest of an existing Dallas-Fort Worth restaurateur. The 75-year-old “magical” steakhouse, as Ross refers to it, is for sale. It’ll remain closed until he can find a buyer.“I’m thinking positive,” he says. “I would love to see someone come in and keep it going.”
Ranchman’s is at 110 W. Bailey St., Ponder. The restaurant closed Oct. 30, 2023. Owner Dave Ross says he’ll be giving out free pies on Oct. 31, 2023., Senior Food Reporter.
