Culture wars, charter school conflict, chronic absenteeism — many challenges await LAUSD this fall
by American Institutes for Research found that the students who attended Transitional Kindergarten in California were up to five months ahead of their peers academically.
LAUSD’s enrollment has been steadily declining for around two decades. In the 2012 to 2013 academic year there were around 566,000 students enrolled in district-run schools . By the 2022 to 2023 academic year, that number had dropped to around 420,000. The races are likely to be hotly contested and campaigning will kick off this academic year as candidates seek to make a name for themselves.
Goldberg came out of retirement in 2019 to run for a vacant seat on the Board of Education and currentlyMcKenna is a dedicated educator who first rose to fame in the 1980s as the ambitious young principal of Washington Preparatory High School in South LA, where he fought for better life and education outcomes for his majority Black student body.
To support their growing student bodies, charter schools have been requesting to lease more classroom space from the district. The district often accommodates these requests by co-locating a district-run school and a charter school on a single campus.
