Early voting for the election on May 6 begins April 24.
Regarding student achievement, Turner-Carrigan said that Plano ISD should observe school districts that aren’t encountering these problems or are improving them. She said she also has suggestions for recapture.
“The situation can only be rectified by the legislature. PISD should work with other districts to craft a solution that can be presented to the legislature,” Turner-Carrigan said. Tarrah Lantz, Place 4 candidate and mother of a Plano ISD third- and eighth-grader who said she has been involved in numerous district committees, toldshe also cares about “fixing the increasingly harmful impact of recapture on our district.”
Lantz said the pandemic exacerbated mental health issues and socioeconomic disparities that can impact student learning. She said the district has also struggled to retain teachers because they are underpaid and overworked.“As leaders and parents, we must be models of the constructive civic discourse, resiliency, and optimism we aim to instill in our students,” Lantz said."We also need to actively counter the stigma around mental health through programs that connect with students.
she is the sole candidate with direct experience as an administrator and educator. Ortega, a retired economics professor, said that while teaching, she learned that college students have “a critical learning deficiency” that results in a lack of problem-solving skills.“In short, we need to give students opportunities to express themselves and to use the knowledge they learned,” Ortega said.
