With several highly anticipated horror films still to come in 2023, here's which scary movie is expected to earn the most at this year's box office.

The 2023 slate of horror films has already killed it at the box office, with more upcoming scary movies expected to provide fierce competition throughout the year. As the box office began recovering from the pandemic, two genres continued to stay strong in theaters amid box office bombs and simultaneous streaming releases: Superhero movies and horror movies.

Cocaine Bear follows Evil Dead Rise with an $88 million worldwide total, giving Universal two of the year’s top-grossing horror hits. Sony’s The Pope’s Exorcist may not have been a hit with critics, but the Russell Crowe horror movie exceeded expectations by earning $66.1 million worldwide against an $18 million budget. The anticipated horror-comedy Renfield has only earned $24 million worldwide against a $65 million budget, thus giving Universal one of the biggest box office flops of 2023 yet.

Franchise horror movies typically have a greater chance at succeeding at the box office, as proven by the performances of Scream 6 and Evil Dead Rise so far. Consequently, those coming from horror series with lucrative track records have better chances to surpass the benchmarks set by M3GAN and Scream 6. Still, upcoming 2023 horror movies with original premises shouldn’t be counted out, as proven by the successful theatrical runs of M3GAN this year and 2022’s great horror movies Nope and Smile.

Insidious: The Red Door also comes from a franchise that has had noted success at the box office, suggesting the summer-releasing sequel will follow suit. All four previous installments in the Insidious franchise have grossed over $100 million at the box office, with The Red Door being likely to beat The Last Key’s $169 million total.
