Does the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R's new EPA fuel economy figures stack up to the competitive Ram 1500 TRX?
. With just a single highway mpg advantage for the Raptor R, it and the TRX would need to get their fill at the same pond. All in all, though, modern technology has allowed these performance trucks to retain the economy of yesteryear, while packing on horsepower and torque.The Raptor R weighs less than the TRX but has 37-inch tires from the factory , advantageous for the Raptor R. When it comes to off-roading, the bigger the tires, the better.
How does the R compare to the"regular" Raptor? The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 F-150 Raptor is rated at 15/18/16 mpg ; the Raptor 37 Performance model gets dinged 2 mpg on the highway and 1 mpg combined driving for 15/16/15 mpg. Think of it this way: the V-8 Raptor R gains a staggering 250 hp over the V-6 Raptor, but loses only 3-4 mpg combined city/highway. Furthermore, it tops the Gen 1 Raptor's naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 by 289 hp while only losing 1 mpg combined driving. In reality, the Gen 1 sees single-digit economy. Give the Raptor R some credit.
And just to throw another fun V-8 off-roader into the mix, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 392 with its 6.4-liter V-8 is rated at 13/17/14 mpg , slightly more"economical" than the Raptor R and TRX. The bottom line? Ignore the numbers and have some fun. Fill up at the pump. Ignore those numbers, too. Repeat. That's the solution for these dinos. Chug chug. Gulp gulp.
