The Queen of Hip Hop Soul seems to be taken for granted these days as an elder stateswoman of R&B. But Gen-Xers with decent memories may recall how big of a damn deal it was that “Real Love,” her first single from her debut album “What’s The 411,″ was built on a sample of Audio Two’s hip-hop classic “Top Billin.’” R&B and hip-hop were still considered separate musical entities then, and some hip-hop heads felt the two should stay that way.
Also, she sold a crap load of records with songs about heartbreak, picking yourself up after a fall and keeping it moving, and getting crunk and having fun in this dancery.Well, she’s a woman, and one could easily argue there is a backlog of women who have been eligible longer than our homegirl, Mary. And though 13 of Blige’s 14 studio albums have peaked inside the Billboard 200 Top 10, her latest, “Good Morning Gorgeous,” peaked at No. 14.
